What’s In It, Adam?

2 oz. gin, 3/4 oz. Laird’s Applejack (apple brandy), 3/4 oz. Grenadine.  Shake with ice, pour over tumbler glass with ice.

Where’d You Find It?

My Mixologist iPhone app!  It has a function called “liquor cabinet” where you input what you got in your stock, and it cooks up a drink for you.  It’s mighty handy in a liquor emergency.

But What About Me?

The Ruby is a refined drink, feminine and strong.  Usually enjoyed as an after dinner cocktail, hence the inclusion of brandy.  Applejack is a phoenix rising at the moment.  It enjoyed a nice post-prohibition life, but since became buried in the Vodka Armageddon of the 80s.  With the recent renaissance of fine spirits, Applejack is enjoying a fat and happy second life.  You can get Applejack at any BevMo, it’s becoming fairly common.  However, if you’re in a booze pinch, any brandy will do.

I’d also recommend adjusting the Grenadine to taste.  At 3/4 oz. it does make the drink a little syrupy.  I usually go for a bit less.  It just depends on how much bite you want out of it.
