Belgium’s in Los Angeles at Beverly Blvd & Curson, across the street from the Grove Mall.  If there’s one thing LA excels at in the food department, it’s in cheeky experimentation and hidden gems.

That’s right, it’s “Just Waffles!” (jazz hands) at Shaky Alibi coffee bar & wafflerie.  Marcus and I spent Presidents’ Day Monday discovering just how much can be done with batter and a waffle press.

First off, our coffee bartender, Johnny, was gorgeous and blond.  Not some “keep your distance, I model for Abercrombie” gorgeous (Think that guy currently stinking up theaters with not just “I Am Number Four” but also “Beastly”), the male version of Lady With Bitch Eyes.  Not so, Johnny.  Genuine smiles for his morning guests.  I was shocked when an American accent left his mouth.  I half-expected some Icelandic kindness to greet us.

But this is about waffles, damn it!  Leige Waffles are their specialty (those are waffles come straight from Belgium).  Leige has a layer of unidentified sweetness in them, which means the waffles need not be eaten with Maple Syrup.  I really don’t even think syrup was an option.  It seemed like an unnamed danger lingered in their air if one of us dared say the word “Maple.”

Speculoos.  That’s not a nonsense word.  That is the spreadable graham cracker topping we had on our waffles.  Graham Cracker butter.  I could die right now.

There were also savory waffles available.  So enamored were Marcus and I with the idea of Speculoos that we didn’t venture into Monte Cristo territory with the thought of Ham and Bacon sandwiched in between waffles.  Next time!
